The main barrier that has traditionally prevented EVs from selling in greater numbers has been the fear that an empty battery will leave you stranded, but there are plenty of models that can cover 200 miles or more on a charge. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) use a small petrol or diesel engine to generate electricity to charge the battery, making them more efficient for long journeys. They’re also more versatile than BEVs, as they can be driven in conventional fuel mode if the battery runs low.
Most EVs are designed to be as easy and convenient to drive as their fossil-fuel counterparts. Most are front-wheel drive and feature electric power steering and regenerative braking that can slow the car without using any brake pedal. Some offer what’s called single-pedal driving, allowing you to accelerate and decelerate by simply adjusting the amount you lift off the accelerator. Some even have a heating function to warm up or cool the cabin before you set off, to avoid draining the battery unnecessarily. When you do need to recharge, there are plenty of charging stations across the country and a number of apps for smartphones that can plan routes with charger stops included.
